World Cancer Day

8/2/2016

Comments

At todays 'World Cancer Day' a wee reminder that you can help us support the Cancer Society Marlborough with the purchase of our pink bubbly Johanneshof Cellars Marlborough New Dawn Methode Traditionnelle 2010.

We created our pink sparkling wine New Dawn from 100 % Pinot Noir to support our local Cancer Society. We donate $10 per bottle to honour their tremendous work assisting people affected by cancer in Marlborough. Cancer Societies around New Zealand receive no Government funding and therefore rely solely on the support of all of us.

'Johanneshof Cellars New Dawn' is named after the pale pink rose growing outside our cellar door. New Dawn signifies the new life cancer survivors have been given as they go into survivorship, like a New Dawn.

Johanneshof Cellars Marlborough New Dawn Methode Traditionnelle 2010 is only available from our cellar door and by mail order. Thank you for your support.

Johanneshof Cellars is celebrating success with it's third Trophy for 'Champion Gewürztraminer' in only two months. At the prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2015 this weekend Johanneshof Cellars Marlborough Gewürztraminer 2014 was awarded the Top prize for this spicy variety yet again.

This year's competition saw 1,407 wines entered, with 84 Golds awarded. Only three wines of this variety were awarded Gold at this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards and Johanneshof Cellars Gewürztraminer 2014 received a very special 'Pure Elite Gold medal' before being awarded the Trophy for 'Champion Gewürztraminer of Show'.

Founders and winemakers at Johanneshof for 25 years, Edel and Warwick are thrilled to have won this Trophy at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. "To get a 'Pure Elite Gold' medal at this prestigious wine show in New Zealand is great, but to win a Trophy is outstanding! Being the third Trophy for our aromatic variety in two months, this is a nice addition to our Trophy cabinet. We are thrilled to receive such recognition for our work with aromatics in our 25th year at Johanneshof Cellars".

Johanneshof Cellars entered only two wines into the competition and with a Pure Silver Medal for the Johanneshof Cellars Pinot Gris 2015 Edel and Warwick are proud to win three awards between both aromatic wine entries.

"Aromatics in New Zealand, and particularly Marlborough, have come a long way, this is a great endorsement for the Marlborough region, showing it can excell in Aromatics as well as in Methode Traditionnelle and Sauvignon Blanc" enthused.

The winning Gewürztraminer was described by Chair of Judges Michael Brajkovich MW,
"Very rich, ripe and gamey aroma of typical Gewürztraminer, with a hint of Botrytis. Luscious Muscat-like fruit characters on the palate, with mouth-coating sweetness and a well-balanced tannic dry finish.

40 years ago the Air New Zealand Wine Awards was created by New Zealand Winegrowers to encourage and promote excellence in New Zealand winemaking for the benefit of winemakers and consumers .
The Church Road McDonald Series Syrah 2013 won Air New Zealand Champion Wine of the Show Trophy.
The judging panel was led by Michael Brajkovich MW, alongside other judges and two international judges, Ronny Lau from China and Mark Protheroe from Australia.

Winning a Trophy at the Six Nations Wine Challenge has just surpassed the honour of being nominated as one of the100 best New Zealand wines to represent our country in the ‪Six Nations Wine‬ Challenge.
We travelled to Sydney this month to compete in the competition, which is owned and managed by the Association of Australian Boutique Winemakers Inc. The head office is in Sydney Australia and the judging takes place there in August each year. Entry is by invitation only and the judge representing each country makes his selections in anticipation of winning the various awards. The challenging countries are Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America.

We are so proud to have won Champion Aromatic Wine in show with our Johanneshof Gewurtztraminer 2014, and to add this trophy to our collection!

Matching Wine with Whales

We are proud to become the exclusive wine sponsor of the National Whale Centre !

Matching wine with whales

Wine is usually matched with cheese, but award-winning, boutique winemaker Johanneshof Cellars is pairing its finest wines with Picton’s National Whale Centre (NWC).

Johanneshof has become the exclusive wine sponsor of the NWC, bringing Marlborough’s wines and whales together in what NWC chair Nick Gerritsen describes as a synergy of local business.

“It seems an unconventional partnership, but we have a lot more in common than you might think,” says Gerritsen.

Both the NWC and Johanneshof have been making waves internationally, with multiple awards for its fine wines and worldwide praise for NWC’s modern, interactive museum concept.

The NWC’s display and development hub on Picton’s foreshore is not like a traditional museum. The centre appreciates and displays the history of whaling and its importance to the Marlborough area in the past while using education and interactive technologies to focus on conserving whales and other cetaceans, such as dolphins, for the future.

Similarly, Johanneshof combines old world knowledge with innovative winemaking techniques to produce quality, hand-harvested, Marlborough-grown wines – including their famed Gewürztraminer.

“Of course, there is also a shared concern about guardianship of New Zealand’s environment, whether that is rooted on land or in the ocean,” says Gerritsen referring to the fact that nine years ago Johanneshof planted a 17-acre forest consisting of 6000 oak trees at their property.

Johanneshof’s sponsorship, which includes supplying wine for NWC functions, will support fundraising efforts to expand the current NWC hub into a much larger centre.

“The support of sponsors like Johanneshof brings a fully-fledged NWC within reach. We’re looking forward to a partnership that brings out the best of Marlborough,” says Gerritsen.

The NWC Trust aims to eventually build an iconic, interactive space on Picton’s waterfront for visitors to learn more about current whale and dolphin conservation efforts and the local area’s whaling history through temporary exhibitions and events.

The NWC project continues to gain wide support from individual supporters, visitors and a growing list of benefactors.
